The Caisses populaires acadiennes continue their efforts to provide youth with greater access to books

Octobrer 13, 2006
Caraquet, October 12, 2006 - The Caisses populaires acadiennes literacy program Lire, découvrir et grandir will be organized again this year. The program is designed so that each parent who enrolls their little one in kindergarten receives a book.

Each parent who enrolls their child in a kindergarten class at one of the 74 Francophone schools in the province will receive the book Modo et la lune published by Les éditions Bouton d’or Acadie. This program directly involves nearly 2,500 four-year-old children who, as a result, will be better prepared for school in 2007.

“We know that the province is delayed when it comes to literacy. Each attempt at reaching out to parents and children—no matter how small—will contribute to making a long-term difference. Our program is an investment in the youth and future prosperity of our province”, confirmed Mr. Camille H. Thériault, President and CEO of the Mouvement des caisses populaires acadiennes.

The Caisses populaires acadiennes is also implementing a second provincial awareness program geared towards emphasizing the importance of reading. The program will be advertized on the radio by Acadian performers. This vast campaign will be on until November 3 and aims to encourage parents to read to their children. Public service announcements will be broadcast featuring the seven performers from Ode à l’Acadie, who are the program spokespersons.

The Lire, découvrir et grandir program’s mission is to encourage people in the community to understand the importance of creating good reading habits for young children, providing access to books, encouraging reading and supporting literacy organizations. The program was created by the Caisses populaires acadiennes and was given a provincial award in the Organization category for its contribution to early childhood.
